“Caving -in” is the phenomenon that the upper block of mining cavity at a shallow depth falls at instant in its cavity, and is different from general phenomenon and mechanism of surface sinking due to mining. The mechanism of caving-in is studied theoritically and the results are summarized as follows.
1) Internal friction angle, cohesion and unit weight of earth layer, width and depth of mining cavity are related to the limitting depth of occurence of caving-in. In general, caving-in has a tendency to occur with proper width or shallow depth of mining cavity and with large unit weight, but has not a tendency to occur with large cohesion and internal friction angle.
2) When the internal friction angle is over 40°, the effect of the internal friction angle on “Caving-in” is more serious than the effect of cohesion.
3) The effect of unit weight on “Caving-in” is serious, when internal friction angle and cohesion are small.
