According to van Oss et al., surface acidity parameter γ+, and basicity parameter γ-, together with dispersive force parameter γLW of paint films and substrates were determined by contact angle measurements.
Hexane, diiodomethane and ethylene glycol were used as diagnostic liquids. The interfacial tension γsp between a paint film and a substrate was calculated from these parameters and correlated to their adhesion behavior. A negative value of γsp was an indication of excellent adhesion, in practice.
