For scheduling problems this paper deals with automatic generation of priority evaluation functions for filtered beam search method which is a kind of heuristic search. Generally, when scheduling problems become large and complex, it is difficult to obtain a priority evaluation function for filtered beam search. To cope with this difficulty, we apply case-based reasoning approach to obtaining a priority evaluation function automatically. In our scheduling system using filtered beam search, a priority evaluation function is created automatically by analyzing the examples of the schedules generated by the system. The priority evaluation function obtained is added to the knowledge base in the system as a sample of priority evaluation functions. Moreover, to evaluate the proposed scheduling system, we solve a transfer vehicle scheduling problem in a manufacturing system.
