A preliminary study of the Japanese black bear, Ursus thibetanus, by using auto-photographic equipment was made in the Tsurugi Mountains, Shikoku, from July 2002 through October 2003. The animals were recorded 18 times, and frequently photographed two to three hours after dawn and within three hours before sunset. Four individuals were distinguished from their neck patches, genitals and body shape on the photographs.
