This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of behaviors of outstanding Japanese language teachers from the teachers' point of view. The results of a questionnaire survey carried out to 50 teachers of high schools in New Zealand were analyzed by applying KJ method and the analysis of variance. The analyses showed that the characteristics of behaviors could be classified into five with "caring for learners" and "teacher's personality" scoring the highest. To examine the awareness of the teachers, cluster analysis was conducted which resulted into four clusters: "awareness is high in all characteristics of behaviors group", "awareness is high in professional knowledge and teaching skills", "awareness is high in caring for learners, teaching experiences and qualifications" and "awareness is low in all characteristics of behaviors groups". In conclusion, the findings suggested that not only teaching skills and professional knowledge are needed for Japanese language teachers, but also the ability to build a good interpersonal relationships with students.
