Fourty seven patients with malignant melanoma (MM) at Tsukuba University for the past 15 years (1978-1992) was statistically analyzed. The frequency of the patients with MM in all newly visiting outpatients had increased since 1978. The sex ratio was 25/22 (male/female) . The age peak of the patients was in the 6th decade. The most frequent type was acral lentiginous melanoma, which arose on the feet, fingers and toes. The following was influenced the survival rate and had prognostic value: sex, type, stage, level, whether biopsied or not before the surgery, period between biopsy and surgery, lymph node dissection in pT3, 4N0, chemotherapies in pT3, 4N0. In our study, tumor thickness did not influence the prognosis between 1.5mm and 7mm.
