Towards the realization of a visual aid system, we have made basic studies on a system trying to display images through sound. In this system, image information from a head mounted video camera are transformed into acoustic information on a headphone. Here horizontally in-line images at the midst of the camera aperture are displayed through stereophonic sound effect, while images in vertical direction are scanned by actively swinging the head. In experiments, subject can recognize the inclination of lines, difference of solid bodies, and characters written on a panel with sufficient accuracy by using this system.
