In this paper, I attempt to analyze the life-structure of inhabitants in a satellite city of Osaka. Usually the concept “life-structure” is defined as the selective and evaluative arrangement of social resources by the inhabitants. However, we have used here the concept of “life-structure” as a way of participation in formal and informal social relations and groups. The reason, why a reconstruction of community is demanded today, stems from the requirement, that inhabitants make use of the specific services of administrative bodies or commercial facilities not only passively, but that they should also supplement those services, i.e. establish others thereby overcoming their egocentrism. If we define the meaning of reconstruction of community in this way, then the significance of selective and evaluative arrangement of specific services is regarded as rather secondary. For that reason the pre-requisites of a reconstruction of community-bonds should be sought by way of participation in primary social networks or groups by the inhabitants of a local society.
Life-structure is analyzed by HAYASHI's quantification-theory. As a result of this analysis, we have found three significant axes. They are identified as follows : I. locality vs. non-locality, H. at home vs. not at home, III.activity vs. passivity. Then we found four patterns of life-structure, which we named “integrative” pattern, “independent” pattern, “segregative” pattern and “peripheral” pattern. They are constructed by crossing the first and third axis.
The following two papers analyze the interrelations in the pattern of this life-structure, which we have found here, and the consciousness of the inhabitants concerning the participation in city-administration and the comfortableness of life.
