Abstract
PMBOK is regarded as the de facto standard of project management guidelines, and it has played a significant role to diffuse systematized knowledge on project management. However, in Japan, there are a lot of cases where the factors determining success or failure in IT projects are outside the PMBOK coverage, which may cause misunderstanding that PMBOK is "useless." This thesis first classifies the cases where PMBOK seems useless, and points out the gaps between knowledge of project risk management described on PMBOK and current situations of IT projects in Japan. In the second place, this thesis raises issues in the PMBOK project risk management such as lack of concreteness in the description on knowledge areas and difficulties to apply project management process. In the last place, this thesis studies how to apply risk management to IT projects in Japan carefully.
