Stimuli-responsive polymer capsules incorporating functional molecules hold great promise for various applications. Recently, we developed a novel approach, the interfacial photocrosslinking reaction, for fabricating functional polymer capsules. This approach enables the robust structural functionalization and crosslinking of polymer shells from simple spherical polymer particles via a facile and environmentally friendly procedure. Utilizing this strategy, we have successfully developed a wide array of functional polymer capsules programmed to be sensitive to pH, thermal, and redox stimuli. Herein, this review comprehensively highlights the fundamental design principles and future perspectives of functional polymers required to construct these advanced stimuli-responsive architectures.
