The bottom pressure distribution of the pressed powder bed was determined using commercial pressure detecting sheet. As a model powder, glass beads (0.105mm-0.088mm) was charged into stainless steel cylinder of 44.0mm, 29.6mm and 18.2mm diameter respectively, From photo-densitometry of the colored sheets, the local pressure was determined within the relative error of ±10%.
From the results of varying applied pressures (0.291kg/mm2-0.584kg/mm2) and thicknesses of the bed (9.2mm-48.6mm), a simple empirical equation
σz/Po=a(γ/R)2+b
where σz is the bottom pressure, Po is the applied pressure, γ is the distance from center, R is the inner radius of the cylinder and a and b are constants, was obtained.
