Particles in a rectangular vessel were analyzed by applying morphological method. Subjected structures were a loosed packing and a shaked packing.
The average fraction of intercepts due to particles on a test line could indicate the most direct information to describe the packed state rather than various morphological data. For example, it would be noticeable that the porosity near the wall did not always decrease for packings of cylindrical particles unlike the case of spheres.
The lengths of intercepts due to particles or voids on a test line were approximated to log-normal distribution. The magnitude of the median value of intercepts due to particles was a little more than the length of the packed cylinder, and that of intercepts due to voids was slightly larger than the area equivalent length of the cylinders. These values are less universal but can be available to characterize the packed structure of such irregular particles.
