The tribo-charge generated between a model-toner composed of CCA/resin-binder mixture and a ferrite carrier was measured by the blow-off method. The tribo-charge was compared with that generated by cascading the ferrite carrier onto the CCA/resin-binder matrix film having the same composition as that of the model toner. Tert-butyl salicylate zinc complex (SZC) was used as the CCA. The SZC was dispersed or dissolved into a cyclo-olefin copolymer (COC) to prepare the toner and the matrix film.
The experimental results show that (1) the amount of negative charge increased with an added amount of SZC, and (2) the charging characteristics obtained from the blow-off and cascade methods were close to each other. By comparison of the amount of charge obtained from the blow-off method with that of the cascade method, the effects of the particle distribution and/or the molecular orientation of the CCA on the toner surface and their contribution to the determination of the amount of toner charge can be estimated.
