In Japan, steel plate bonding method has been widely adopted as a way to reinforce concrete slabs of highway bridges. Usually, the inspection for in the steel plate bonding is performed by a hammering test. However, using the hammering test, quantitative determination of specific damages becomes very difficult. Thus, the development of a new test method is desired. In this study, a laser based method is developed for remote inspection of bonded steel plates. To verify analytically the resonant frequencies of voids, theoretical and FEM analysis solutions are compared. Some results obtained from laboratory measurement of specimens are also compared with numerical solutions. Results showed that the laser based method has a promising possibility to become an effective nondestructive evaluation method for steel plate bonding of highway bridges.
