Since the introduction of the term “organic semiconductor” by Inokuchi, organic semiconductors have attracted broad interest due to their possible use for electronic devices. Another reason for this interest is that organic molecules are very sensitive to chemical modification and external fields, such as light, electric, magnetic fields and physical pressure. Recently, high quality bulk samples of the first four polyacenes, naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene, doped with alkali metal in 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 stoichiometries were prepared and their fundamental properties were studied. A new understanding of the electronic states of electron-doped polyacenes sensitivity to the energetic balance among on-site Coulomb repulsion, band width and Peierls instability has been provided. The carrier-doped typical aromatic hydrocarbons showed a large variety of properties as well as charge transfer complexes, and metal doped fullerides. We have opened a new category of carbon based materials.
