Pillar[n]arenes have a pillar-shaped polygonal structure and versatile functionality. They are very useful building blocks for making molecular-scale porous materials with various functions. In this paper we describe the construction of one-dimensional channels and two-dimensional porous sheets based on the pillar-shape structure. Molecular-scale porous materials based on crystals of pillar[n]arenes and the conversion of a pillar[6]arene-assembly to porous carbon are discussed.
