In this study, we examined onomatopoeia from the perspective of verbal adornment and aimed to clarify the influence of onomatopoeic use on impression formation in communication via e-mail. To achieve it, we designed several specific situations where onomatopoeia was used. In Study 1, we dealt with the types of situations and recipients. Study 2 dealt mainly with the age of the evaluator. In Study 3, the senderʼs age group was considered. The sequence of these studies enabled the clarification of some of the effects of onomatopoeia. Despite the limit of the conditions, it was confirmed that the characteristics of onomatopoeia, such as childishness, were reflected in the impression formation of the sender( the text of the e-mail). Additionally, social competence was found to be affected in some situations.
