From dogs, depancreatized and suffering from hyperglycaemia of a moderate degree for some days, the suprarenal vein blood was collected without fastening, narcotizing or laparotomizing. Epinephrine was estimated by means of the rabbit intestine segment.
Insulin was intravenously administered. In the cases where a small dose of the hormon was given, the blood sugar content was also conspicuously reduced, its degree of reduction was large enough and the velocity with which the reduction progressed was not inferior to the present cases or those in the normal dogs of Yen and others, in which insulin was proved to augment the epinephrine secretion, but the reduction did not advance beyond the standard limits of blood sugar found in normal dogs, and at the same time no acceleration was elicited in the liberation rate of epinephrine.
It may thus be concluded that insulin does not act to increase the epinephrine discharge so far as it does not yet influence to reduce the blood sugar content beyond the normal level i. e. to occasion hypoglycaemia, in spite of causing a reduction of the blood sugar on a large scale and velocity.
