The resistance to acetonitril of albino rats after the suprarenal bodies were taken out was measured.
Acetonitril (Kahlbaum) was subcutaneously injected. For normal rats, the minimum lethal dose was measured as 0.7 c. c. per 100grms. of body weight and the maximum non-lethal dose, that is the maximum amount of the chemical which does not kill the animal at all, as 0.3 c. c. per 100 grms.
The figures were respectively 0.5 c. c. and 0.2 c. c. for the rats, the suprarenals of which were removed 3 days earlier; these rats were therefore less resistant to the drug.
They were respectively 0.65 c. c. and 0.3 c. c. for the rats, which were similarly operated on 3 days before the acetonitril injection, but not decapsulated. They were more resistant than those recently decapsulated, but a little less resistent compared with normal individuals.
Further the doses were noted as respectively nearly 0.5 c. c. and 0.3 c. c. for the rats which were indefinitely surviving double suprarenalectomy. The rats were therefore wholly the same as the rats, which were operated on 3 days before, only as the controls, in respect to the maximum non-lethal dose, but clearly inferior in respect to the M. L. D. On the whole this kind of animals is somewhat less resistant than the control operated.
Recapitulation: Removal of the suprarenal capsules elicits in albino rats a hypersensitiveness to acetonitril. The minimum lethal dose was found to be 70 per cent of the normal, 3 days after decapsulation, and recovered only a little when tested half a year later, but the maximum non-lethal dose, which decreases also on removing the main glands, was found wholly recovered half a year after decapsulation.
Decrease of M. L. D. of acetonitril by the double decapsulation in the present researches on rats is wholly of the same degree as that on rabbits, previously measured by Oikawa, and in fact of incomparably less than that on albino rats of Crivellari.
