Human milk positive to Arakawa's reaction is a good milk, while Arakawa-negative milk is a bad milk, or a poisonous milk, as has been shown by a number of papers from this Laboratory. A methyl glyoxal like substance was shown by myself to be present in an Arakawa-negative milk, and methyl glyoxal synthetized was found by Prof. Sato and myself to have a heart-enlarging effect in rabbits. Then phenyl glyoxal, which might possibly exist in Arakawa-nega-tive milk, was found by myself to have the same effect in rabbits. But the heart enlarging experiment with milk or milk extract itself had not been undertaken until the present work of mine, because the obtaining of necessary kinds of human milk in a sufficient amount for a number of consecutive days was a very difficult task. Thus I was compelled to experiment on mice instead of on rabbits. And the re-sult was that ether extract of human milk positive (in a clinical sense) to Arakawa's reaction did not cause an enlargement of the heart, while that of Arakawa-negative milk did produce an enlargement. But an administration of vitamin B in a sufficient amount prevented Arakawa-negative milk from producing an enlargement of the heart.
