Abstract
Atropine was intravenously administered in doses of 5 or 10 mgrms. per kilo of body weight into dogs, made ready to collect blood from the suprarenal gland without fastening the animal, narcotizing, laparoto-mizing or evoking any pain. Epinephrine was estimated by means of the rabbit intestine segment.
Atropine evokes an acceleration in the epinephrine output rate, but only on a small scale, such as two-three times the preliminary one. This acceleration usually sets in soon on the injection and lasts one hour or so. In parallel with this accelerated epinephrine secretion, the blood sugar increases too.
In a single case the acceleration period was preceded by a transitory depression.
