Previous research regarding help-seeking has assumed that self-directed help-seeking is adaptive, while avoidant or excessive help-seeking styles are maladaptive. However, few studies have examined this premise empirically. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological adjustment and three types of help-seeking styles: self-directed, dependent, and avoidant. We also examined moderation effects of help-seeking styles on the association between belief in a just world and psychological adjustment. We conducted two online surveys targeting Japanese adults. Results showed that avoidant style was consistently maladaptive. Self-directed style was relatively adaptive, but the association was not strong. Dependent style was not necessarily maladaptive, but rather partially positively associated with psychological adjustment. Furthermore, the higher the dependent style (and/or lower the avoidant style), the more the positive association between intrinsic belief in a just world, and interdependent happiness was amplified. Thus, the results suggest that the dependent style is not maladaptive, but rather has positive effects on psychological adjustment.
