Pig model has been widely employed in the preclinical study to explore new therapeutic strategy to overcome the human kidney disease, however, less has been known about normal reference of the kidney size in minipig model. Therefore, the present study was aimed to establish the establishment of the renal artery intervention via the carotid artery to apply large intravascular medical device and standardize normal reference of the kidney morphology in minipig model. The renal arteries in the total number of 15 minipigs were accessed via the carotid artery under the guidance of angiography, and they were monitored for 3 months to check occurrence of relevant complications. Captured angiographies were evaluated regarding the size of the kidney and renal artery, position, direction and branch according to the right and left side. Minipigs mainly had single craniolaterally directed renal artery with 2 or 3 branches in each kidney. Both sides of the kidneys and renal arteries presented symmetrical size, however, the orifice of the right renal artery from the aorta was positioned cranially than the left side. In addition, this procedure was successfully applied in diagnosing morbid kidneys in minipig as well. We can expect that the present trial contributes to secure the reference data in case of the radiological diagnosis of the renal disorder as well as safety of renal intervention method via the carotid artery when larger medical devices need to be applied as the preclinical study in minipig.
