The purpose of the present study was to clarify the influence of human support on the exercise self-efficacy of the elderly, especially, content of support and the subject of influence. Data for this study were gathered from 451 (144 males and 307 females) elderly persons over 60 years of age who visited a Center for Seniors located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, from September to November in 2010. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis with a stepwise approach was performed to elucidate the effect of the human support factors (positive and negative), age and health consciousness on the exercise self-efficacy of the elderly. Analysis was performed for both total sample and each gender sample. As a result, the following points were clarified.
1) There were acceptable levels of factorial validity and reliability for both the scale of human support for physical activity of the elderly and exercise self-efficacy.
2) Positive formal support and health consciousness indicated significant influences on the exercise self-efficacy of the elderly.
The present results suggest the possibility of intervention for using formal human supports in order to encourage participation by the elderly.
