This paper describes the contribution and the future of housing studies in urban housing studies and for urban residence.
First, I describe the genealogy of housing studies and the issues raised in the first issue of Urban Housing Sciences. I
discuss the following five points related to the contribution of housing studies. (1) The royal road of the housing studies,
which is a study about the actual situation of people’s living conditions, (2) the view to the common space - the creation of
a new urban residential style, (3) socialization of housing management in the housing stock era and the sustainable society,
(4) the viewpoints of different groups of people – the elderly, children and others, (5) aiming for “life recovery” of affected
people - the roles of housing researchers at the Great Hanshin - Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake. The
results indicate that the characteristic of housing studies is of interest in people’s lives in cities and the contribution of
housing studies is significant for urban residence. In the future, it will be necessary to explore the direction of the
development of housing studies considering market principles and housing rights.
