2-Methyl-1,4-naphthohydroquinone diacetate (I) is easily hydrolysed by alkali to form 2-methyl-1,4-naphthohydroquinone (II), which decompoees to its quinone (III), phthiocol (IV) and the others. After studies on the conditions of the hydrolysis of (I), the following condition is recommended for determination of (I) in multi-vitamin preparations : borate buffer solution (0.025 M, pH 8.5) of sample containing 2 mg % (I) is heated at 100° for 20 min, then produced (II) is observed by oxidation wave E1/2 -0.33V vs NCE at 25°.
