Growth inhibition of Leuconostoc mesenteroides P-60 and Streptococcus faecalis R by 21 analogues of 2-methyl-4-amino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine (OMP) was compared with that by OMP. Following analogues showed inhibition of the growth of these bacteria in different degrees : 2-methyl-4-methylamino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine, 2-methyl-4-amino-5-for-mylaminomethylpyrimidine, 2-methyl-4-amino-5-methylpyrimidine, 2-methyl-4-amino-5-thiomethylpyrimidine, 2-ethyl-4-amino-5-aminomethylpyrimidine, and 2-methyl-4-amino-5-nicotinylmethylpyrimidine. Among them the inhibitory effect of 2-methyl-4-methylamino-5-hydroxy methylpyrimidine was about 3 times and 19 times as active as that of OMP to Leuc. mesenteroides and Stc. faecalis, respectively. It was proved that inhibitory effect of 2-methyl-4-amino-5-thiomethylpyrimidine was not attributed to impurity of OMP which might occured during sterilization.
