Abstract
Nucleic acid metabolites accumulated in the culture media of Escherichia coli exposed to the action of azauracil and azathymine were examined by ion exchange chromatography. In the presence of azauracil, large amounts of azauridine and orotic acid were accumulated, as already known. However, in the case of azathymine, neither azathymine riboside nor deoxyriboside was found, but considerable amounts of uracil and hypoxanthine were isolated. The accumulation of uracil is discussed in view of the action mechanism of azathymine.
