It was observed at 24 hours after an injection of the labeled sulfate that more than twice the amount of S^<35> was found in intestine, stomach, lung and eyes of vitamin A supplemented rat, as compared with those of the deficient one. When S^<35>-methionine was administered, contrary to the case of S^<35>-sulfate, S^<35> in these tissues of control rat was significantly less than in those of vitamin A deficient animal.

Nucleic acid metabolites accumulated in the culture media of Escherichia coli exposed to the action of azauracil and azathymine were examined by ion exchange chromatography. In the presence of azauracil, large amounts of azauridine and orotic acid were accumulated, as already known. However, in the case of azathymine, neither azathymine riboside nor deoxyriboside was found, but considerable amounts of uracil and hypoxanthine were isolated. The accumulation of uracil is discussed in view of the action mechanism of azathymine.

It has previously been studied that the liver pyruvate oxidase system was activated by addition of nucleosides. In the present papar, the effect of inosine-5'-phosphate and 4-amino-5-imidazole carboxamide riboside on the yeast carboxylase system was studied. It was recognized that the addition of the former accelerates the pyruvate decarboxylase activity but the latter has scarcely influence.

The activity on the growth of lactic acid bacteria by violet fluorescent substances produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium were investigated. Moreover, whether they display growth-inhibiting effect upon several fungi, yeast, bacteria and Hiochi-bacteria or not was also examined. The major component of the fluorescent substances, can replace folic acid for the growth of Streptococcus faecalis R, supporting 44% of maximum growth with 0.773 μg/ml concentration when autoclaved together with the media, while the growth was not accelerated by the material, added asepticaly.

Histopathological studies of experimental vitamin B_<12> deficiency using rats have been performed. In peripheral blood, marked leucopenia and macrocytic anemia accompanied by anisocytosis were observed, though no megaloblast was encountered. In heart, moderate atrophic and degenerative changes of muscle fibers were found, and small necrotic foci were demonstrated in severe cases. In stomach, marked atrophy of mucosa were observed. Glandular cells revealed enlargement of cell bodies, exhibiting marked vacuolar degeneration. Desquamation of lining epithelia was encountered. Bowels exhibited catarrhal changes of mucosa. Marked atrophy and degenerative changes of liver cells were encountered. Centrolobular liver cells showed marked decrease of RNA granules, whereas liver cells of peripheral portions exhibited marked increase of RNA granules of cytoplasm. In bone marrow, degenerative changes and decrease of number of nuclei of megakaryocytes, decrease in number of matured erythrocyte and leucocyte were noticed, though a large number of enlarged erythroblasts were found. In brain, especially spinal cord and spinal ganglion, marked atrophic changes of nerve cells were demonstrated. No marked degenerative change was encountered in peripheral nerve fibers except for degeneration of myeline sheath in preterminal region. Testes revealed atrophic changes and arrest of spermatogenesis.

A histopathological study has been made on the peripheral nervous tissue of pyridoxine deficient rats. In pyridoxine deficiency, neuron somas exhibited marked atrophic changes and degenerative changes such as fatty changes, decreasing of Nissl substance and disappearance of neurofibrils. Disruption of nerve cells was not so remarkable. In peripheral nerve fibers, marked degenerative changes and destruction of myeline sheath and then degenerative changes of axon were demonstrated. These changes were markedly encountered in preterminal regions. Degenerative change of end-plate was not remarkable.

A histopathological observation on the lesion of peripheral nervous tissue of vitamin A deficient rats has been performed. Marked degenerative changes of nerve fibers were demonstrated specifically in cornea. Slight vacuolar degeneration and decrease of Nissl substance were observed in neuron somas of trigeminus ganglion, spinal ganglia and spinal cord. Degenerative changes of motor neurons were not extended to the endplates, whereas moderate destruction of sensory ending was observed.

A histopathological study has been performed on the peripheral nervous tissue of pigeons fed on polished rice and rats in experimental deficiencies of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. In peripheral nervous tissue of pigeons fed on polished rice, marked degenerative changes of neuron somas, nervous fiber and end-plates were observed. In case of thiamine deficiency, lesion was initiated by an appearance of myelin droplets of Schmidt-Lantermann's incissures and dissociation of myelin sheath from axolemma. The changes were followed by disintegration of myelin sheath, later causing bubbling and destruction of axons, more marked in distal portion of nerve fibers. Axonal reaction were found in both motor cells of spinal cord and sensory spinal ganglion cells. These changes were identical to those of experimenfal pyruvic acid administration. However lowering of choline esterase activity and disruption of end-plates of motor neurons were obsserved in thiamine deficiency, whereas the changes were not found in pyruvic acid application. Riboflavin deficiency was characterized by shrinkage and clumping of neurofibrils, and acute swelling or liquefaction of nerve cells in spinal cord, spinal ganglia and Auerbach's and Meissner's plexus. In spite of severe damages in neuron somas, alterations of distal nerve fibers were surprisingly slight, possibly due to rapid course to death of animals. In niacin deficiency, both nerve cells and fibers were damaged at the same time. Degenerative changes were demonstrable in motor, sensory and vegetative neurons. Lowering of choline esterase activity and destruction of end-plates were also demonstrated.

It is recognized by many investigators that the deamination of serine, threonine and the synthesis of cystathionine are catalysed by the same enzyme. The author revealed the existence of a new enzyme, serine dehydratase in rat liver which is virtually free from the other two enzymes. The crude extract of rat liver was separated to two fractions by 0〜30 and 30〜50% saturation of ammonium sulfate. The latter fraction exhibited mainly the serine dehydratase activity and it was purified to about 60-fold by acetone fractionation and hydroxyl-apatite column chromatography. New serine dehydratase, thus obtained have several characteristics compared with those of the enzyme of other fraction, e.g., Km for substrate and pyridoxal phosphate. Serine dehydratase was also obtained from pig liver as highly purified form (150-fold) and its properties were compared with those of rat liver enzyme.

Bivalent metal salts, such as Zn, Mg, Mn, Cd etc. of 6-benzamido-4-methoxy-m-toluidine diazonium chloride are more stable than its free diazonium chloride. These salts react easily with oxalacetate at room temperature in alkaline medium to form the colour substance having the maximum optical density at 520 mμ. Using these zinc salts as the colour developing reagents for oxalacetate, we established the routine assay method of glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, and malic dehydrogenase activities in serum. Upon measuring GOT activity in serum of patients by three different methods (diazonium salt method, Karmen method and Reitman・Frankel method), we came to a conclusion that this new diazonium method was very advantageous to Reitman・Frankel method in accuracy and simplicity for clinicians.
