A new chemical method of assaying ergothioneine (Ergo), was established by taking advantage of its nature that allows to react with p-chloromercuribenzoate but not with N-ethylmaleimide.This method enabled the determinaition of Ergo content in various organs, and revealed that Ergo was contained at high concentrations in the male sex organs. ^3H-Labeled Ergo, when given to rats, was proved to be remarkably incorporated into the male sex organs on the examination of the tissue distribution of 3H. This fact suggested a close relationship between Ergo and sexual organs. Moreover, when examined on the subcellular distribution in the liver, it became clear that this substance resides mostly in the supernatant fraction. (Received June 29,1972)
