Comparison was made on the growth rates of Wistar strain male rats fed on vitamin E-deficient diet and on vitamin E-excessive diet for 9 months since weanling. Since both the increase in stature and the stimulation of retraction of thymus were observed in the vitamin E-excessive group, an indispensable function of vitamin E for growth and development of rats was presumed. From these results and observations, the biological significance of vitamin E would be deduced that the vitamin might be essential for mitosys and maintainance of cellular function besides the well-known vitamin action.
