The rheological and morphological changes of erythrocytes obtained from Sprague-Dawley rats fed on a-tocopherol (α-Toc) supplemented, control and deficient diets for 7 months were examined. (1) The α-Toc content in erythrocytes varied depending on diets, and the ratio of cell to plasma a-Toc content was 0.26. (2) The suspension viscosity oferythrocytes increased, as the cellular a-Toc content decreased. (3) The echinocytic transformation of erythrocytes in an isotonic medium proceeded faster, as the cellular a-Toc content decreased. (4) The deformability of echinocytes under the high shear stress decreased. (5) The increase of suspension viscosity of erythrocytes well correlated with the progress of the echinocytic transformation. In conclusion, a-Toc in erythrocytes protects the morphological changes, and has the preventive action against the rheological irnpairments by maintaining the bi-concave-disk shape.
