The physiological importance of arginine-specific ADP-ribosyltransferase in vertebrates has not been elucidated, partly because its target proteins are not identified yet. In this paper, we describe four candidates for the targets (p33 and actin in chicken heterophils, Gsα in chicken spleen cell membrane and Ca^<2+>-ATPase in rabbit skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum) and effects of ADP-ribosylation on their functions, and discuss the possible role of arginine-specific ADP-ribosylation in vertebrates.
