Abstract
Growth-stimulating substances for bifidobacteria originated in culture broth of basidiomycetes and selected microorganisms were investigated. Most strains of the Bifidobacterium showed good growth on basal medium by addition of culture broth of Bunashimeji and Awabitake, isolant W27 and Escherichia coli AKU 0005. When concentrated culture broth as chromatographed on Sephadex G-25, growth stimulating effect was observed with the fractions containing several amino acids. Among amino acids, valine and leucine were the most effective for growth stimulation for B. adolescentis, B. bifidum and B. infantis. Glutamic acid, proline, arginine and lysine also stimulated the growth of B. infantis.
