Abstract

In the previous papers of this Journal no.22(March 2014), no.31(March 2018), no.41(March 2021), no.42(Oct 2021), no.44(March 2022), and no.51(Oct 2025), the author discussed the development of bilateral relations between Japan and Vietnam in the 21st century.

Following them, this article discusses the development of Japan‒Vietnam relations in 2022.

The First Section of this paper describes PM Kishida Fumio’s visit to Vietnam in April to May 2022.

The Second Section deals with Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh’s visit to Japan in May 2022.

The Third Section summarizes Minister of Justice Furukawa Yoshihisa’s visit to Vietnam.

The Fourth Section refers to Japan-Vietnam foreign ministers’ talk at the ASEAN related ministerial meetings in Phnom Penh in August 2022.

The Fifth Section discusses the Exchange of diplomatic notes for the entry into force of the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between Japan and Vietnam in August 2022.

The Sixth Section summarizes Head of Party Central Committee’s Organization Commission (and Chairperson of the Viet Nam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association) Truong Thi Mai’s visit to Japan.

The Seventh Section Summarizes President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to Japan (to attend State Funeral for former PM Abe Shinzo) in September 2022.

The Eighth Section overviews Japan-Vietnam prime ministers’ meeting at the ASEAN-related Summits in Phnom Penh in November 2022.

The Ninth Section overviews the APEC Ministerial Meeting and Japan-Vietnam foreign ministers’ meeting in Bangkok in November 2022.

In the Concluding Section, the author briefly makes some additional comments to several aspects, instead of a genuine conclusion.
