It has been recently shown that fatigue strength of fillet welded joints is reduced in accordance with increase of main plate thickness. Stress concentration factor at the weld toe play an important part in connection with the fatigue strength of these welded joints. In order to investigate the effects of weld geometry parameters on the stress concentration factor at the weld toe of non-load carrying fillet welded joints, a series of numerical calculations was performed based on the boundary element method. The effects of toe radius, leg length, main plate thickness and attachment plate thickness on the stress concentration factors of the cross joints subjected to tension and the tee joints subjected to tension as well as bending were made clear. On basis of the calculated results, the empirical formulae to estimate the stress concentration factors at the toe of the fillet welded joints are proposed. The estimated values agree with the calculated results within a few percent errors.
