Robot application technology is divided into a number of categories depending on the level of advancement. In the specific heavy industry such as shipbuilding, which is characterized as the "one of a kind" production process, the technology of offline programming is indispensable for the use of robots. Furthermore, the required technical level and form of application of offline programming vary depending on the concept of CIMS implementation of each industry. In this paper, a concept of shipyard CIMS is firstly discussed in contrast to the one of the car industry which is advanced in some fields of CIMS. From the point of view of shipyard CIMS, current state of the arts of robot application technology was reviewed and an advanced operation linkage technology between CAD, CAM and robot systems was introduced. Author's shipyard has developed the system based on their CIMS concept: "Harmonized Autonomous Distributed System". Present status of welding-automation including robotization was also introduced as an example of author's shipyard.
