On computer systems in recent years, distributed processing with networking engineering work stations has been applied, instead of centralized processing with a main frame or super mini computer. The ship hull structure CAD/CAM system, "HICADEC-H", developed by Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Hitachi Zosen Information Systems Co., Ltd, has been operated on the centralized processing with a super mini computer. However, as the system expanded its application range, its response time took a sudden turn for the worse, which was caused by basic concept of the centralized processing. So, the computer system has been ported to the distributed system, investigating the recent technology. And then, the system proved that it gives users great profits as follows, through practical applications. (1) Processing speed of each engineering work station is to be 2.6-1.5 times as first as a super mini computer. (2) Application range is to be 45 times as much as a super mini computer. (3) All computers on the network are to be used effectively. (4) Operator arrangements are to be flexible with networking engineering work stations. (5) Combination of multi vendors' computers is to be planed flexibly with the UNIX operating system. (6) System operations are to be flexible with the window system. (7) Man hour of production design to generate a part is to be reduced.: assuming that the man hour on centralized processing is 100 first application on distributed processing: 65.9 second application on distributed processing: 62.6 This paper describes the matters to be attended to the distributed processing, profits to be obtained there based on our practical use, and also outline of database management system as a key technology.
