In order to discover powerful anthelmintics for tape-worm, 8 kinds of acylated derivatives of phloroglucinol were synthesized, i.e. phlor-[aceto-, propio-, n-butylo-, n-valero, n-caprono-, oenantho-, benzo-, phenylaceto]-phenones., according to Hoesch's method. Clemmensen reduction of these compounds to 8 alkylated derivatives, i.e. ethyl-, n-butyl-, n-amyl-, n-hexyl-, n-heptyl-, benzyl- and phenylethyl-phlcroglucinol were made. As a preliminary tests for their anthelmintic properties, toxicity tests against earth worms and antibacterial actions against Staphylococcus aureus 209 P and Bacillus coli were carried out. Phloro-[n-caprono-, oenantho-, phenylaceto]-phenones and n-hexyl and n-heptyl-phloroglucinol showed strong toxicity and anti-bacterial actions against Staph. aureus. Of these 5 compounds, phloro-phenylacetophenone showed the strongest antibacterial power, being 85u/mg as against 1667u/mg of penicillin. However, none showed any efficacy against E. coli.
