Abstract
Oxidation of bicycloisohinokiic acid with potassium permanganate in alkaline solution yielded an oily dicarboxylic acid, in which one of the carboxyl group was found to be quaternary by titration. The p-bromophenacyl ester, m.p. 134-135°, of this acid was found to be identical with the derivative prepared from β-ionone via bicyclodehydrofarnesenic acid. From the results of oxidation, it has been proved that bicycloisohinokiic acid is 1, 1, 7, 10-tetramethyl-Δ5, 7-dihydronaphthalene-6-carboxylic acid.
