New absorption bands have been observed in the spectra of aqueous mixtures of p-benzoquinone with caffeine and theophylline at 382mμ and 380mμ, respectively. An examination of stability constant values through Rose-Drago plots revealed that complexes of 1 : 1 molar ratio were formed. The nature of interaction was examined also by solubility method. On the basis of the experimental results and molecular orbital considerations, the authors presumed that the new absorption bands could be ascribed to charge-transfer type interaction between p-benzoquinone and the xanthine derivatives.
