Aerial oxidation of furfural in alkaline solution at 40° was studied, with Ag2O-CuO-pumice catalyst in a packed-bed reactor. Some side reactions were observed and the by-products were recognized only in the gas-phase. The mass-transfer rates from gas to liquid and from liquid to solid gives to effects on the reaction rate. The reaction rate of yielding 2-furoic acid was proportional to the concentration of furfural. The side reactions were approximately of a first order reaction. We have suggested an adequate design equation, which is agreeable with our experimental results.
