The reaction of 4-aminotropolone with diketene gave two unknown compounds (V and VI), which had the same analytical formula, C15H13O5N. The structure of V was determined as 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-1-(tropolon-4'-yl)-2 (1H)-pyridone from its oxidative degradation and its NMR and IR spectra. Studies on NMR, UV, and IR spectra of VI and its analogous compounds deduced its structure to be N-(tropolon-4'-yl)-2, 6-dimethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-carboxamide. The synthesis of VI from 4-aminotropolone and p-nitrophenyl 2, 6-dimethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-carboxylate confirmed its structure. Furthermore the reaction of 2-aminotropone with diketene was tried, and the structures of two products were determined.
