Perkin reaction of thiophene-aldehydes and phenylacetic acid was attempted in the presence of a triethylamine catalyst. 2-Thiophenecarboxaldehyde (IV) afforded α-phenyl-2-thiopheneacrylic acid (V) and α-phenyl-2-thiopheneacrylic anhydride (VI) ; 5-nitro-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde (VIII) afforded α-phenyl-5-nitro-2-thiopheneacrylic acid (VII) ; 2-thiopheneacrolein (XIV) afforded 2-phenyl-5-thienyl-2, 4-pentadienoic acid (XII) ; 5-nitro-2-thiopheneacrolein afforded 2-phenyl-5-(5-nitro-2-thienyl)-2, 4-pentadienoic acid (XVI) and 2-phenyl-5-(5-nitro-2-thienyl)-2, 4-pentadienoic anhydride. α-Bromo-5-nitro-2-thiopheneacrolein (XVIII) afforded, according to the reaction temperature, 4-bromo-(5-nitro-2-thienyl)-2-phenyl-2, 4-pentadienoic acid (XIX) or 4-(5-nitro-2-thienylidene)-4-hydroxy-2-phenylcrotonic acid γ-lactone (XX).
