It is well known that a useful pharmacological action is found in 3-aryloxy-1-carbamoxy-2-hydroxypropanes. In order to examine correlation to this group of compounds, some Schiff bases were prepared. Starting with 7-(2, 3-dihydroxypropyl) theophylline (III), a derivative of theophylline, it was derived to dioxolanone compound (IV), then to the carbamoxy (V) and hydrazide (VI), and the latter was condensed with anisaldehyde, benzaldehyde, vanillin, and protocatechuic aldehyde, from which the Schiff bases, VII, VIII, IX, and X were obtained. Their pharmacological activity is now being examined.
