Homosulfamine crystallized from various solvents was found to have three anhydrates (II, III, and IV phases), and a solvate which contained 2/3 molecule of water of crystallization. Phase II shows a polymorphic transition at about 200° to IV, which is stable at higher temperatures. IV is also obtained by heating III at about 180° and is easily transformed to II at room temperature. The hydrate is stable in high humidity (75% relative humidity), but is apt to lose 2/3 H2O to become II phase in low humidity (20-30% relative humidity). It is desirable that homosulfamine be preserved at 5°, because this dehydration is also influenced by the temperature. All these phases were classified by using IR absorption spectrometry, X-ray powder diffraction, photomicrograph, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry.
