Abstract
The hydrolysis of m-and p-xylenesulfonic acids was performed with sulfuric acid of various concentrations and the unchanged xylenesulfonic acids were determined as barium salts. The kinetic results were explained as a reversible reaction and the rate constants k=k1+k2=1/t ln xe/xe-x and the activation energies were determined.
The plots of log k1 to H0 (acidity function) and log k2 to H0 gave straight lines with slopes 0.7, 1.67 for m-xylensulfonic acid at 100°C and 0.6, 1.5 for p-xylenesulfonic acid at 130°C respectively. No appearent hydrolysis was observed when the sulfonic acids were treated with sulfuric acid of specific gravity more than 1.652.
