This study proposed an effective teaching method for junior high schools called " appreciation by dialogue. " It first revisits two facilitation methods utilized by teachers: "navigation " and " relation. " It then considers both the selection of the viewing material and a pathway for more effective facilitation. Last, a model lesson was created in which two artworks were viewed in succession during one period of time, with a class conducted for verification and analysis. Results clearly show that the facilitation method used in this model lesson is effective to a degree with regard to fostering higher-level appreciation of a work of art, including " the ability to gain a deeper perspective, judge its value, and relate it to one's way of life. " As the first report in this study, this paper outlines how preliminary practice based on a review of literature resulted in the creation of the facilitation model outlined above, which has implications for future developments in this area.
