This study aimed to clarify the factors of (1) likes and dislikes of art and (2) factors that make university students like or dislike art who are enrolled in nursery and kindergarten teacher training courses. A total of 83 university students answered a questionnaire about likes or dislikes of art. As a result, 59% (n=49) were “like”, 22% (n=18) were “dislike”, and 19% (n=16) were “neither”. It shows that more than half of university students positively perceive art. Additionally, quantitative text analysis shows that the existence of “others” is a factor that makes students like or dislike art. In some students, the presence of “others” made them realize diversity. However, being among “others”, it made them feel inferior. Additionally, it became clear that technical difficulties also affected “dislike”. Based on the above, we proposed a teaching method to encourage university students to like art.
