This study investigated the enamel and dentin bond durability of a two-step adhesive system, using a universal adhesive-derived primer (G2-Bond Universal [GU]), and compared it with the two conventional, two-step, self-etch adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Bond 2 [CS] and OptiBond XTR [OX]) under thermal cycling (TC) and long-term water storage (WS). The shear bond strengths to bovine enamel and dentin were determined using the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes. Twelve specimens per test group were prepared and further divided into the following subgroups: 1) subjected to TC, 2) long-term WS, and 3) WS for 24 h (baseline). The enamel and dentin bond durability of GU was superior to those of CS and OX in different etching modes and under different degradation conditions. The latest two-step adhesive system, which utilizes universal adhesives’ benefits in its primer, might offer durable clinical bonding performances and can be widely used in a clinical setting.

Bone regeneration requires cells, growth factors, and scaffolds that should have biocompatibility, porosity, and physical strength. Therefore, coral granules (CG) with diameters of 600–1,000 µm were prepared as a potential graft material from cultured edaphic thermostable corals. X-ray and electron microscopy characterization revealed that CGs were porous and permeable with lumen diameters of approximately 200 µm. Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts showed significantly increased mitochondrial activity in culture seven days after adding CG. After CG filling into an experimentally created one-wall infrabony defect in a beagle dog jawbone, the defect almost completely disappeared within approximately 8 weeks, and bone tissue growth was observed in the replacement area. This could indicate extremely rapid healing of a bone defect previously considered incapable of self-healing. Based on stable supply of cultured coral (Montipora digitata), CG is potentially an ideal replacement material for alveolar and jawbone defects.

This study examined the crystal orientation of four kinds of pressable lithium disilicate glass-ceramics and evaluated the effect of crystal orientation on flexural strength. Bar-shaped (24 mm in length, 1.2 mm in thickness, 4.0 mm in width), disk-shaped (12 mm in diameter, 0.5 mm in thickness), and crown-shaped (maxillary first molar) specimens were prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Three-point and biaxial flexural strengths were measured for bar- and disk-shaped specimens. Microstructure analysis was performed using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Three-point flexural strength was improved by parallel crystal orientation along the longitudinal direction of the bar-shaped specimen. There was no relationship between two-dimensional crystal orientation and biaxial flexural strength. The results of this study assumed that biaxial flexural strength was improved by the crystal orientation in the cross-sectional direction. Pressed restorations are expected to possess higher strength than milled restorations due to their crystal orientation.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-temperature degradation (LTD) on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia. In addition, the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured were compared with those before aging under similar experimental conditions. This study prepared stereolithography apparatus fabricated zirconia specimens with flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness. The specimen position data were set as parallel (0°), diagonal (45°), and perpendicular (90°) to the direction of the building. The LTD condition was 5 h under 134ºC and 0.2 MPa in an autoclave. It was found that the 0° direction differed significantly from all other conditions before and after aging, and the highest flexural strength was obtained when the additive specimen was manufactured perpendicular to the building direction. However, the results indicate that there is a negligible effect of aging on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia.

Coronavirus disease pandemic has led to a shortage of disinfectant alcohol (DA; 76.9–81.4% ethanol solution) in Japan. This study investigated the availability of hypochlorous acid (HA) as an alternative disinfectant to DA in clinical environment. HA is a safe and economical disinfectant with a broad antibacterial spectrum and low risk of hand irritation, which is used worldwide. In this study, HA and sodium hypochlorite solution (SH) were degraded over time and the degradation was accelerated by temperature and lighting. Results of bactericidal effects of HA revealed that the realistic effective concentration should be 200 ppm. Compared with DA, the dental carbon steel burs were more severely rusted by SH and HA. These results indicated that high concentration of HA generated on-site could be an effective and safe disinfectant for use immediately after generation with consideration of object materials in clinical environment, as an alternative to DA.

This study aimed to develop a novel polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) composite fabricated via a slip-casting method for a dental training model tooth with machinability compatible to human enamel. A PICN model tooth comprised of silica/acrylic-resin was fabricated via the slip-casting method. A commercial resin-based model tooth and human enamel were used as the control sample. The samples were evaluated based on Vickers hardness, inorganic contents, density, and machinability. The machinability was characterized by a grinding amount obtained from the grinding test using a device equipped with a dental micromotor handpiece with a diamond bur. The properties of the PICN model tooth yielded a silica content of 84.7% and a density of 1.99 g/cm³, and its Vickers hardness (312) was comparable with that of enamel (348). The grinding amount was comparable with that of enamel. The castable PICN model tooth was compatible to enamel in terms of hardness and machinability.

We prepared hydroxyapatite (HAp) bone grafts by the setting reaction of calcium phosphate cement, and investigated the effects of the porosity and crystallinity on the osteoconductivity and bioresorbability. We examined the effect of the water-mixing ratio, pressure, and post-heat treatment temperature during preparation on the crystallite size and porosity of the HAp blocks. The quantity of protein adsorption increased with increasing porosity and specific surface area (SSA) of the HAp blocks, whereas the initial cell attachment was similar despite the different porosities and crystallinities. In in vitro dissolution tests with a pH 5.5 buffer, which mimics an osteoclast-created Howship’s lacuna, both the porosity and SSA of the HAp blocks affected the solubility; most likely due to the increased contact area with the buffer. Thus, HAp blocks prepared by the setting reaction of calcium phosphate cement could be applicable for bioresorbable HAp bone grafts because of the high porosity and SSA.

The sequential oral functions of mastication and swallowing are well tuned in humans. To prevent oral hypofunction as a risk factor for systemic frailty by oral motor training, semi-powered exoskeleton was developed and evaluated its loading/assist effects by monitoring electromyography signals and saliva secretion in healthy persons. The actuator of the driving unit combined mechanical and powered mechanics and was driven alternatively by an unpowered stainless-steel spring system for jaw-opening training by loading and a powered shape-memory alloy spring system to assist jaw closing. Sequential device movement was controlled by two electronic circuits with two magnetic switching systems to match human jaw movement. This exoskeleton realized a 25% increase of jaw-opening muscular activity for training, 15% saving of jaw-closing muscular activity for assistance, and 15% enhancement of saliva secretion, which could contribute to the prevention of oral frailty by maintenance and strengthening of oral function in the upcoming super-aging society.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface modification of calcium ions on roughened titanium as a surface treatment of dental implants for cell attachment, growth, and initial bacterial adhesion. When a surface-roughened, pure titanium disk was immersed in a calcium chloride solution (100 mM) containing 20 ppm ozone for 24 h at 25ºC, calcium was detected on the surface by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The calcium-modified, roughened titanium disk had a significantly greater concentration of the initially adhered cells as well as cells cultured over 7 days compared with titanium disks without surface modification. Furthermore, the initial bacterial adhesion on the calcium–ozone treated titanium disk was statistically less than on a pure titanium disk or titanium disk treated without ozone. Dissolved ozone was useful for modifying the surface of roughened titanium with calcium ions and the surface modification may be applicable for dental implants.

Electrolyzed waters, containing mainly hypochlorous acid, are used in dental practice because of their high microbicidal effect. For wider use, three neutral electrolyzed water-based gels, namely, HOCl-containing aqueous gels were prepared with a thickening/gelling agent in this study. We evaluated their microbicidal effects against four strains and storage stabilities indicated by available chlorine concentration. Immediately after preparation, all gels (70 ppm) could completely remove microbes by a 3-min treatment. The gel prepared with xanthan gum remarkably reduced its available chlorine concentration even under shaded and refrigerated storage conditions, failing to maintain its microbicidal effect following 1-day storage, whereas other gels, prepared with carboxyvinyl polymer or agar, maintained effective concentration (>20 ppm), with high microbicidal effects following 9-day and 21-day storage, respectively. Neutral electrolyzed water-based gels might be useful to remove oral microbes. Based on our results, agar is the most suitable thickening/gelling agent from the viewpoint of storage stability.

The dentin–enamel junction (DEJ), which is the interface between the outer tooth enamel and the underlying dentin, has unique biomechanical properties that allow the two different materials to function together without fracture. The aim of this study was to investigate the anisotropic ultimate tensile strength of the DEJ. Twenty dumbbell-shaped samples were prepared from 10 extracted human molar teeth for tensile strength testing. The maximum tensile forces at fracture were measured in the direction parallel (10 samples) and perpendicular (10 samples) to the DEJ. The mean tensile strength of the samples was significantly higher under parallel forces (30.9±3.3 MPa) than under perpendicular forces (20.6±4.8 MPa; p<0.05). Our findings confirm the structural anisotropy of the DEJ.

The mechanical properties of highly translucent partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) need to be improved; however, improvement of mechanical properties often decreases translucency. To overcome this problem, a monoclinic ZrO₂ (mZrO₂)/SiO₂ dispersion was prepared and applied as a coating material for PSZ. The influence of surface treatment by the mZrO₂/SiO₂ dispersion on the surface topography, crystallography, and mechanical properties of highly translucent PSZ was investigated in this study. Following the treatment, the mechanical strength of highly translucent PSZ improved by 170% compared with control, for the best mZrO₂/SiO₂ dispersion ratio and heating temperature condition, while maintaining its translucency. The proposed coating is promising for improving the mechanical properties of highly translucent PSZ.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the shear bond strength and perform the computational analysis for silane coupling treatments on the adhesion between CAD/CAM composite resin and resin cement. As silane coupling agents, γ-methacryloyloxy propyltrimethoxysilane, 8-methacryloyloxyoctyl trimethoxysilane, and 3-methacryloyloxypropyl trichlorosilane were used. The shear bond strengths were influenced by the silane coupling agent used, its application method, and acid addition. There was no correlation between the contact angle and shear bond strengths. The steric energy difference between a silane coupling agent and its corresponding hydrolyzed trisilanol compound, ∆E, was calculated by the molecular mechanics method. There was a moderate or strong linear correlation between ∆E and shear bond strengths in treatment without acid addition and a weak correlation between them in treatment with acid addition. Computational analysis could suggest the different path of silane coupling treatments of CAD/CAM composite resin in the presence or absence of acid.

Directly milling zirconia computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) crowns from fully sintered zirconia blocks using a five-axis laser milling system, compared with three-axis milling and full sintering by heating milled semi-sintered crowns, was investigated. The mechanical characteristics of zirconia specimens were similar across groups. The order of the marginal gap was three-axis>conventional (lingual thickness of 1.5 mm>0.5 mm)>five-axis group (close to zero). The marginal shape was almost perfectly circular in all groups. The internal corner shape and gap were almost perfect for the five-axis milled crown but not for conventional and three-axis crowns. The roundness of the marginal and internal shapes was almost perfect in the five-axis milling group but not for the three-axis and conventional groups. These small distortions result in large marginal gaps. Results of the present study suggest the superiority of the five-axis milling system in creating a zirconia prosthesis.

Two type of partially stabilized zirconia, namely yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) and ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals including aluminum oxide nanocomposite (Ce-TZP), were irradiated by nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG laser and the regular structure with concave and convex of each 30 μm width and 30 μm depth were prepared on both surfaces. In the case of Ce-TZP, the surface was changed to be black after laser irradiation. EDX measurement revealed the reduction of more amounts of oxygen atoms on Ce-TZP compared to Y-TZP. Laser irradiated zirconia implants were inserted into the bone defects of rat femur during 4 weeks. As a control, large grid sandblasted and acid etching (blastedHF) implant was used. Laser treatment for Y-TZP provided greater degree of bone-implant contact ratio than blastedHF treated Y-TZP (p<0.05). In the case of Ce-TZP, however, laser treatment showed no clear effect on bone response.

We have previously fabricated hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticle-assembled powder (nano-HAP) plates and granules by assembling low-crystallinity HAP nanoparticles without template/binder molecules or high-temperature/pressure treatments. In this study, we combined the nano-HAP with fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 2, which promotes odontoblast differentiation, and used this as a pulpcapping agent for dentin defects created in rat molars. The tissue response was then radiologically and histologically assessed at 1 and 2 weeks after capping, to assess the biocompatibility and ability of this material to promote hard tissue formation. The application of nano-HAP/FGF2 induced the invasion of dental pulp cells and vessels, and was consistently found to stimulate formation of a dentinal bridge containing numerous dentinal tubules. We thus succeeded in treating the pulp exposure by using a physiological approach to promote tissue regeneration. Further investigations should be performed to explain exactly how the nano-HAP/FGF2 combination contributes to calcified tissue formation.
